A Judge Wearing an Apron

A man living in Osaka, Japan, enrolled in a culinary school after retiring. There, he learned how to trim vegetables, handle knives, and master all the essential cooking techniques alongside his young classmates. After completing the year-long course, he earned a certificate and opened a small restaurant.

This man, who embarked on the second chapter of his life as a chef, was once the Chief Judge of the High Court. But why did a former judge, who spent thirty-six years handling weighty legal cases, choose to open a restaurant instead of a law office—a more expected path?

“My heart broke whenever I handed down a sentence, condemned, or punished someone. So, I wanted to spend the rest of my life doing something that could bring joy to others. You can’t imagine how happy I am to be able to please people with the food I prepare with all my heart.”

Although his days are busy and physically exhausting—preparing ingredients, cooking meals, and serving customers—he says he has never been happier.

Happiness can be found in both what we excel at and what we love. One thing is clear: social status is not a prerequisite for a fulfilling life.
