We often hear that to achieve our goals, we must never give up—after all, quitting is for losers. Yet in reality, even winners give up, and often, countless times. As business strategist Seth Godin once said,
“Winners quit all the time. They just quit the right stuff at the right time.”
Everything we do is the result of choice—and every choice requires letting something go. To choose one path is simultaneously to forgo all the others. When we rise at the sound of the alarm instead of lingering under the covers, we give up the comfort of oversleeping. When we resist the urge to buy something we want but do not truly need, we give up the impulse to splurge. And when we set down our spoon despite still feeling capable of eating more, we give up the temptation to overindulge.
True winners know how to give up decisively—shedding what does not serve their goals and letting go of unnecessary desires. To achieve what we truly seek, we must never give up on our ultimate aim; yet along the way, we must be willing to relinquish again and again.
