At the 2022 Latin Grammy Awards in Las Vegas, the honor of Best New Artist was awarded to ninety-five-year-old Ángela Álvarez, making her the oldest winner in the history of the awards.
Born in Cuba, Álvarez began playing the piano and guitar at the age of fourteen, singing songs she had written herself. However, because of her father’s opposition, she was unable to pursue her dream of becoming a singer and had to keep that longing tucked away in her heart. After marrying and having three sons and a daughter, she immigrated to the United States following the Cuban Revolution. While struggling to settle in a new land, she endured the heartbreak of losing both her husband and daughter to illness. Left to provide for her children on her own, she took on whatever work she could find to make ends meet.
Whenever the hardships of life grew heavy, Álvarez turned to songwriting and singing for strength. Over time, she composed more than fifty songs, each reflecting the joys and sorrows of her life. Her grandson, who grew up witnessing her passion for music, later became a music producer. At his encouragement, she released her debut album at the age of ninety-four, finally fulfilling her lifelong dream.
“I felt very, very proud to be able to tell my story, to touch people who have probably gone through the same or more than what I have gone through. . . . To those who have yet to make their dreams come true, know that although life is hard, there's always a way out . . . I promise you, it is never too late.”
